Queensland Law Society welcomes the appointment of Australia’s first Indigenous senior counsel, Tony McAvoy SC, a former QLS member now at the NSW Bar.
Queensland Law Society president Michael Fitzgerald congratulates Mr McAvoy on his well-earned appointment, and takes some pride in the fact that Mr McAvoy is a former member of the Society, having started his career as a solicitor in Brisbane. Mr Fitzgerald says Mr McAvoy’s career has been largely devoted to helping those most in need, and his contribution in the area of native title and land rights has been outstanding. “On behalf of Queensland Law Society, I know the appointment of Mr McAvoy will inspire more indigenous Australians to seek careers in the law, and aspire to the highest offices the profession offers,” says Mr Fitzgerald.
