As of 1 September 2021, the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Circuit Court of Australia were merged into the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. It consists of Division 1 (formerly the Family Court of Australia) and Division 2 (formerly the Federal Circuit Court of Australia) and significant new rules, regulations, and practice directions. The emphasis is on quicker resolution of matters via prescribed pre-action procedures, appointment of more judicial and quasi-judicial officers, discrete lists of specific case types, use of technology (video-link hearings), and penalties for failure to comply with rules, regulations, practice directions and orders.
